Info and Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is Rate My Talk (@talkr)?

Rate My Talk allows conference attendees to provide immediate feedback with little-to-no delay. It is currently in extremely-early beta stages and is another creation by Damon Cortesi, who also created TweetStats and the DM Whacker.

  2. How do I use @talkr on Twitter?

Either send a reply or direct message to @talkr with the last name of the speaker you wish to rate denoted with a hash tag (#), and it will try to find the presentation you're at.
You can rate a presentation 1-5, 5 being awesome, 1 being ... terrible.
You can also add a comment on the end of your tweet to give further detail.
This is a sample tweet: d talkr #cortesi 5 Awesome speaker, must see!

  3. Can I create my own events?

Not yet, but you will be able to at some point.

  4. Who sees my comments?

If you reply to @talkr using the @ sign, everybody on Twitter sees the tweet unless your account is protected.

If you follow @talkr and use a direct message, @talkr keeps track of who sent the message but doesn't publicize who it came from. These messages are currently displayed for each speaker.

  5. What happens after the conference?

For each speaker, Rate My Talk will display aggregate statistics of ratings provided by conference attendees. We are currently determining the best way to share comments with the community in order to prevent potential abuse.

  6. What is this "custom" RateMyTalk weighted score you speak of?

In order to identify those speakers that really make an impact on people (for better or worse), we use a custom algorithm that takes into account not only the ratings provided by conference attendees, but also the amount of feedback. The algorithm really isn't all that complex and you could probably figure it out if you gave it some thought over a coffee or Mountain Dew.

  7. I have a question that wasn't answered here.

You have a couple options for getting help:
    - Contact @dacort on Twitter - this is probably the best way.
    - Send an email to help@ratemytalk.com, and ask your question there.

  8. Your site hurts my eyes - are you going to update the design?

Yes, I realize my design skills leave quite a bit to be desired. I hope to update the site a some point with a fashionable design. If you are a designer and would like to volunteer (!!), please get in touch via the avenues noted above.
